Eurydice | Week 1This is my wife! We just got married not that long ago. I proposed to her the first time I saw her, and I think that's where the title the school gave me comes from? But it took a while to really win her over.
Eurydice is clever, and practical, and smart, but she has some trouble trusting people. She used to travel all over the place, and I think she's seen a lot of the bad in them. Being wary of everyone seems like a lonely way to live, though, and while I'm glad she feels like she can trust me I hope she starts to open up to others a bit too. I know that's hard with all the talk about murder going on, but I'm sure it'll be fine. Week 2The Wizard gave us all photographs of things that might happen in our futures. Mine was her, being taken away personally by Lord Hades, in the middle of a winter storm. I can stop it, though. I'm sure of it. Week 3She got on the train. She went to Hadestown, because she felt like there weren't any other options. How could I not have noticed that she felt so hopeless? Why wasn't I there? I have to do better. If I can't finish the song in time - at least I can be there for her. I promised that I'd be there for her. |
| Maestro Salieri | Week 1A professional composer who's currently working on a commissioned opera about the Danaides. He showed me an excerpt of it, which was incredible on its own, but when I mentioned I'd never seen a real opera before he decided to put together a performance of one of the scenes with the rest of the 'students' here at the school. I'm really excited to see it.
I also got the opportunity to show him the song I'm working on, and while he seemed pretty impressed I'm hoping maybe he has some advice on what it's missing. He did say he'd help me out with it, when we both get the chance. Week 2The opera was incredible! And he's asked me if I'd be willing to play the part of Lyncee, if he does more scenes. I don't know if that will still be happening though, after everything that's happened. Either way, he's still helping me with my song, and I really appreciate it. Week 3I think we can definitely say the opera is on hold after, um. Everything. Still, I'm grateful that I got to see as much as I did, and Maestro Salieri has been very kind and a huge comfort through all of this. Also apparently he knows Mozart, and I don't think he likes him very much. |
|
Spongebob | Week 1A fry cook from under the sea! He's made a habit of making breakfast for all of us every morning, which worries me a little bit because he uses up a lot of food? But I guess he's pretty confident that we won't run out, and he's really good at what he does, so I guess I shouldn't complain. He's really friendly, though, and doesn't seem worried that we'll be stuck here for long at all, which is kind of refreshing? Week 2He found Mumble's body. I - I wish I could have spared him that. He was so confident that none of us would try anything, even after what the Wizard showed us, and he was right, but it was still really hard for him. It doesn't seem like he's lost anyone like this before? Eurydice and I have been trying to help him through it. Week 3I feel really bad for Spongebob. He was so sure what happened to Mumble and Elisabeth wouldn't happen again, and he went to the trouble of throwing us all a party the night before Connor was killed. When it turned out the SQUIP had killed him on purpose, he took it really hard. I wasn't... there for him, after the trial, but I know Eurydice went to check on him. And I'll do better, this week. |
| Elsa | Week 1A woman who can control ice and snow. I thought at first she might be Calais and Zetes' half-sister, but it doesn't sound like either of her parents are gods at all. She seemed really excited to see that I can do some magic too - she said it's really uncommon where she comes from, to the point where she'd never heard of anyone else like her outside of stories.
She's heard about the Argo, and about Heracles somewhere, but for some reason she thought they were all fiction? Still, it's sort of exciting to think people know about me. Week 2I didn't get the chance to talk to her much this week, but she seemed almost as upset by what happened to Mumble as Peregrine and Eurydice. Maybe it has to do with what she talked about, with her powers giving her trouble in the past. I don't know if I should bring that up, though. Week 3She and I both had weird dreams about winter at the beginning of the week, and while we thought it might've just been because of what happened to Mumble, I guess everyone else had them too, and some of them are sure they were memories. Either way, she told me that she saw someone come back from death, once? I might... need to know more about that. |
|
Mister Barker | Week 1I ran into him while he was looking for his wife, Lucy. It sounds like they were in the middle of their honeymoon when he woke up here? He seemed really worried, and I don't think Lucy showed up here with him. She sounds like an amazing woman, though, and he clearly loves her very much. I hope we can get out of here so he can go back to her soon. Week 2I didn't get the opportunity to see Mister Barker much this week, but he was offering his services as a barber earlier on. Maybe that's what he does back home? Week 3Mister Barker remembered he has a baby daughter! He showed me a photograph of her and his wife, and then I kind of panicked, because I realized I'd remembered some stuff that I really didn't want to be a memory instead of just a weird dream. He talked me through it, though, even though I sort of ruined his happy moment by doing that. He's a good man. |
| Peregrine | Week 1The first person I ran into here after I woke up. She seems pretty suspicious of everything, and I think she has kind of a temper? She seemed really mad about something in the yearbooks, and she tried to attack Miss Hester after she mentioned something about a blizzard. That's pretty fair though? This is a really stressful situation to be in. Honestly, she reminds me just a little bit of Eurydice, and not just because she was taking stock of supplies in the kitchen too. Week 2Peregrine took Mumble's death really hard - I think winters must be pretty bad where she comes from too, and her photo, the one Miss Hester gave her, was of one of her friends dying of hypothermia. I'm kind of worried about her, and I'm going to try to keep an eye on her for the next while. Week 3It seemed like Peregrine and Connor were really close, which, um. He died, this week, and she had an even harder time than before. It sounds like she's already had to lose so much, even before coming here. I'll keep checking in on her, every now and then, but I don't want to overdo it? What do you say to someone going through something like this? |
|
The Balladeer | Week 1Uh. The... narrator? Of a play, about people who've tried to assassinate US presidents. Not an actor who plays the narrator, but he actually only exists while the play is running, or that used to be the case before he came here. He knows a lot about stories and how they work, but I'm not sure how much any of that applies here? He's the one who explained people might be here from different worlds entirely to me.
Oh, also he seems to know about the man I was named for too, and I'm not sure he thinks that's a good thing. I don't really know what to make of any of it. Week 2I'm a little worried about him. He seems kind of directionless sometimes, and I guess if he's used to always having directions that would make sense? I'm trying to be a good friend and ask him about what he thinks and what he wants whenever it seems important. He told me a little about his friend, the Player, and how she might be waiting to get us out of here until it's the right moment. I hope she doesn't wait too long. Week 3Apparently people keep getting guns out of the machine in the cafeteria? The Balladeer's been looking after most of them, which is probably good. He seems responsible. |
| Maya | Week 1A student at a music academy. She's a vocalist and dancer, and she told me about how her school has each of its classes work on one play for three entire years before performing it at some kind of festival named for the school. Or is the school named for the festival? Either way, it sounds really intensive, and she's really passionate about what she does. I asked her to teach me some of what she knows about singing, since it might help with the song I'm working on.
She also said something about a giraffe, when we were talking to Miss Hester? I need to ask her about that. Week 2I did not ask her about the giraffe. I did see her perform as Hypermnestra in Maestro Salieri's opera, though, and she was incredible! She didn't seem to think so, though. I get what it's like, feeling like something was missing from your work that no one else seems to mind, but I'm a little concerned about her being too hard on herself. Week 3We were both pretty busy this week and didn't run into each other much, but I think she seemed to be doing a little better? I'm not sure, though. I'll have to try harder to check in with her next week. |
|
Elle | Week 1She said she's from southern California, but a version where the Gods haven't been around since ancient times, or maybe never existed as anything but stories? Apparently the seasons just happen there, because of how the world spins or something, but even without Persephone the summers are getting hotter thanks to something called global warming. It's also the year 2007 where she comes from? I don't really understand any of it. Week 2I didn't talk to her much until after the trial, but she seemed really confident that we'd get out of this together, which was nice to hear. It's good to know that it's not just me that still has hope. She had a really good idea about trying to send messages home to our friends. That's probably more manageable for Discord or whatever other method we find than sending entire people back, right? Week 3During a meeting Elle also brought up the idea that maybe we should try meeting in the bathrooms, because that's the least likely place for Miss Hester or the Wizard to overhear us. She seems really clever. |
| Farrah | Week 1One of the younger girls here. She seems pretty smart, but I don't really know what to make of her? She said this all seems like an experiment to her, like the faculty are waiting to see who's tempted by rule five and they'll stop us before anything goes too far. I guess I kind of hope she's right?
Apparently her mother married a rich man and she used to go to an even fancier school before this. I'm not sure I can imagine that. Week 2I think the Wizard showed her her own murder? But, back home, not here. I didn't get the chance to talk to her about it, but she seemed pretty upset for understandable reasons. I'll keep an eye on her, but it seems like a lot of the others are looking out for her too, which is something, at least. Week 3I didn't really want to pry, but I think she... remembers her own murder now? I don't know how that works and I don't think I should think about it too hard, but I think she must've been stabbed, because she seems really worried about knives now. She's keeping most of them locked up after what happened to Connor, and I don't know how much it'll help? But I'm going to continue keeping an eye on her. |
|
Varian | Week 1He was also with me when I found the Death Note, and also helped me burn it. I think I've seen him around the scene shop, mostly, working with the tools there? He says he's an engineer, alchemist, and inventor, though his world doesn't have much in the way of electricity yet. He seems really smart, though, and took apart the thing that started wailling at us when I lit the fire. Week 2He seemed to take the voting during the trial really hard. He wouldn't give up until there weren't any other choices left, and it's hard not to respect that, even if it turned out there was nothing we could do. Week 3Varian showed me some of his work after he got it out of the vending machine - it was a bunch of little glass vials that glowed the same way fireflies do, which is apparently a chemical reaction? He also said he learned to do all of this by himself, without a teacher or mentor, which is really incredible. |
| Cassandra | Week 1I think she's one of Eurydice's dorm mates? She seemed a little worried that I was sitting with her while she was resting, but when I explained who I was it was fine. Week 2I still don't know much about her - she says she's not much of a musician or an artist, but she joined in when I tried to rally us together. It didn't stop the Wizard, but I'll remember that. Week 3I didn't get to talk to her much this week? I'll try harder next time, she seems really strong and brave, and it'd be good to get to know her better. |
|
Janis | Week 1I didn't catch her name, but she was with me when I found the Death Note and helped me burn it even though she wasn't so sure it was actually real. Then we got rained on despite being inside, because I guess buildings in this time and place can do that to put out fires when they start. Week 2I didn't get the chance to talk to her this week either, but she seemed like she knew something about what's going on during the trial? She yelled at the Wizard for it and called him a boomer, at least. I don't know what that means, but it sounded bad. Week 3She's started filming us as a way of documenting what's going on here. I wonder what it'll look like, when it's all done? She seemed pretty familiar with the camera, so maybe she's done something like this before. |
| Rina | Week 1A girl with pink hair. She was looking for something with a hood to wear, since I guess that's what she's used to back home. She seems kind of shy? Week 2I didn't see much more of her this week? Apparently she's pretty good with technology, though. Maybe she can help figure out what to do about all the cameras. I'll ask her about it. Week 3She really does seem pretty shy. I didn't really talk to her this week either. I did see her doing this thing with a notebook held up in front of her face when she was talking to other people, though, which was interesting! Maybe I'll ask her about that, too. She and Farrah and Varian all seem pretty close. |
|
Lord Discord | Week 1The lord of chaos and spirit of disharmony. I found him painting a bunch of 'Z's on the wall by the principal's office. Apparently it was a statement about this place being so boring it puts him to sleep? I guess there isn't much to do other than explore and talk to people right now, but it's hard to imagine being bored when what's going on is so confusing. He says he likes to toy with people and their relationships with his powers normally, but the Wizard took away his abilities here. Normally he can travel between dimensions easily, though, so if we can get his powers back and convince him to help us, maybe he can take us home. Week 2Earlier on it seemed like he was trying to act like he was above the rest of us, but I think Mumble's death rattled him as much as anyone else. He helped out during the trial, at least, and he didn't seem too happy after it. I don't really know what to make of him, though. Week 3So I guess some of us are getting memories of the time we're missing from back home in our sleep now? And Lord Discord seems much calmer now. He told me about how he was trapped in stone for terrorizing people back home, but he made friends with one of the only people who has the power to do that to him, and she's promised not to do it again. I'm glad he's found someone who's worth changing for. |
| Prince Angus | Week 1I haven't spoken to him yet, but I've seen him working out in the weight room. He seems really strong! Week 2It turns out he's the crown prince of Scotland, which is called Fife in his world, which seems to have a really strong warrior tradition. He really liked the song I sang him about President Roosevelt's expedition to Laestrygonia, and told me about the King of California, and the war with the sorcerer Zargothrax.
At the trial, the Wizard said some things to him that it didn't sound like either of us really understood. It seemed like the Wizard knew him, somehow? But he seemed just as confused as I was. Week 3I talked to Prince Angus after the trial. I guess his world has beings like the SQUIP, but not as advanced. He seemed as upset as I am about... I don't know. The wasted opportunity? That the SQUIP decided to do all of that, instead of having faith and learning with us. |
|
Miss Hester | Week 1The assistant director and secretary of the school. She showed up to answer questions on the first day, but um. She wasn't all that helpful? Mostly she told us the Wizard brought us here, and that most of us were picked for it, and that to leave one of us would actually have to murder someone else, like rule five said.
She really doesn't seem to like the Balladeer. Week 2I don't think she's here because she wants to be, or at least that she didn't expect things to go the way they did. She sounded genuinely upset when Mumble died, and during the trial she seemed really afraid, especially when... when Sissi was killed, even though she was the one singing over her execution. Maybe we can convince her to help us? I don't know. Week 3I was sort of too distracted during the trial to pay much attention to Miss Hester, but she didn't seem very happy to be there this time, either. Maybe I should try talking to her. |
| Lumpy Space Princess | Week 1She threw a knife at Miss Hester! I think she was just trying to get out of here, but it was still pretty frightening. She said Miss Hester stole her "lumps," which is a word she uses a lot in ways that I don't really understand. She's loud and thinks science and books are dumb, and apparently has been kidnapped a lot before, usually because her kidnappers want to marry her? That's all I really know. Week 2Apparently her name is Lumpy Space Princess? She said she's from Lumpy Space, and I guess she's the princess, but shouldn't she have another name? Anyway, she seems pretty intent on trying to kill Miss Hester or the Wizard to get us out of here, and I'm not sure that's a good idea. She did sing with me at the trial, though. Sort of. Week 3I think she might've been close with Connor? I'm not sure I ever saw them hanging out all that much, but she was almost as upset as Peregrine when he was killed. Also she seems to really like knives. |
|
The Wizard | Week 1We don't know much about the Wizard, except that they brought us all here, picked most of us for whatever's going on, and can make the earth shake and intercept a knife out of midair with magic. I think they might be a god? If they're strong enough to do all that. But none of this seems like any of the gods I know. Week 2It turns out he's some kind of automaton? Or someone controlling one that we couldn't see. He said a lot of stuff during the trial - that he didn't start this, that there might've been others before us, that this is the way it had to go, because that's how these stories are. He seems to think this is all some kind of show he's putting on. Week 3There was a lot going on at the trial and I had a hard time focusing on all of it, but I think I heard him say the SQUIP had been through this before, somehow? And that he "didn't understand" last time, either. Something even stranger than we thought must be going on here, if he's telling the truth. |
| Mumble | Week 1A penguin! I think the wizard turned him human? Or maybe that happened before he got here. I've only really heard of humans being turned into other things, but I guess anything is possible.
Mumble seems pretty confused about a lot of what's going on here, which makes sense if he's never been around humans before. He calls us aliens. I showed him how cooking works after he tried to eat a frozen fish, and we talked about how there isn't really enough food to go around in either of our worlds. I don't know what's going on in his, but I hope his people find some solution soon. Week 2 Mumble was a tap dancer. He said he knew how, straight out of the egg, and he gave me some really good advice on trying to let the melody of my song speak for itself. He died pretty soon after that, though, after getting trapped in the freezer. I'll miss him. |
|
Elisabeth | Week 1One of the first people I met here who recognized my name. She said it was from an ancient Greek story, but my mom never told me anything about that? I was a little afraid to ask in more detail, honestly. Her husband is named Franz-Josef, and she was looking for him when we arrived, but I don't think he's here? She also might be one of the people here from another time or place, because she didn't seem to think electric lights were common even in big cities like Vienna. Week 2She's dead. The Wizard killed her, after Mumble got locked in the freezer and she tried to help him. He forced us all to vote, and I know we would've died if we hadn't, but it means we had a hand in killing her. I'm sorry, Elisabeth. |
| Connor | Week 1I haven't spoken to him yet either, but Eurydice says he knows how to cook pretty well! Week 2I talked to him a little while I was thinking about how we might be able to fake someone's death to get out of killing anyone. He seems really smart, and pointed out that it probably wouldn't be easy to trick the Wizard, and that the cameras are probably just around to make 'avoiding detection' like the rules say harder. I don't think he trusts people very easily - I mean, he did tell me that he doesn't trust anyone in Ambassador, even though Prince Angus and the Balladeer and Mister Barker seem nice enough to me. Week 3He's gone. I got to talk to him a little bit, before he went. About his life back home, and the strange letters he was getting out of the machine in the cafeteria. Apparently he was really struggling, and the SQUIP took advantage of that and... anyway. I wish I'd gotten to know him better. |
|
The SQUIP | Week 1Not sure who this is, either. Mostly he seems to stand around and watch people. Week 2I don't really know what to make of him. He was the first person to vote Elisabeth guilty, and threatened to vote for other people if they refused. After the trial he said some stuff about how revolutions usually can't muster enough people to really make changes, and asked me if I'd die to make the world better. I told him yes. He said that was interesting. Week 3Apparently he was an AI who was made to help people make logical, unemotional decisions. He killed Connor, to try to make it back to the person who he was supposed to do that for. Because it was the logical choice, he said. But for all his talk of not having any emotions, it seemed like... he was starting to understand us. Just a little, by the end of his trial. But I guess we'll never know, now. |
