It's Curtains Round 3 Deadletters
[ Tucked into Orpheus's songwriting notebook, among all the iterations of the song for Hades and Persephone and all the love songs for Eurydice, is a folded letter, written in messy, scrawling hand.]
Hi, everybody,
I'm not very good at writing letters, but I thought it was important to leave something behind in case something happened to me. I don't think anything is going to. I really do mean what I keep saying to all of you, that nothing is going to tear us apart, after all of this. But it's also true that nothing is guaranteed, I guess, and I don't want to risk leaving something unsaid.
First of all, Eurydice, if you're reading this, I'm so sorry. You are the whole world to me, and I was never happier than when I was with you. I wish we'd had more time, and that I'd thought to cherish the time we had more. I promise you, if I had a choice I would have never left your side. Please, be brave for me. I know you can be. Wherever you go after this, I hope you live a long and happy life. I hope you find someone else who loves you as much as I loved you, and I hope they can give you what I couldn't. I hope someday you can remember me fondly and without pain.
Spongebob, Farrah, you two are like siblings to me, and I am so grateful. I've never really had a big family before, but you two care so much, it was hard not to feel that way. Please, look after each other. I know it's going to be hard, but you'll keep your spirits up, won't you?
Benjamin, you've had such a hard life already, and I'm sorry to add another loss to that. Can you forgive me? If it's not too much, I'd like to ask one last favor of you. Can you forgive yourself? Can you find some measure of peace? I think you deserve it, and that has to count for something, right?
Peregrine, thank you so much for all your help, throughout all of this. Like with Benjamin, I'm sorry to leave you even after I said I wouldn't. I know there's nothing I can do to make it up to you, but please believe me when I say that none of this is your fault. None of this was ever your fault. Sometimes the Fates are cruel, and random, and it doesn't mean you're destined to be alone. You are so smart, and determined, and you deserve the world. Don't let despair stop you from seizing it.
Elle, Prince Angus, thank you both for your words of wisdom and encouragement through all of this. You're both so kind, and loving, and brave, and you've both been there for all of us this whole time. I hope when you get out of here, you can find someplace nice to live your lives together.
Elsa, I know you haven't had an easy time of things either, and I'm sorry. But it was wonderful being your friend while it lasted, and I hope you can find your way home to your sister at the end of all of this. I'm glad we got to talk about our blessings - and your magic is a blessing, I'm sure of it. Also, please remember what I told you, about how much little acts of kindness mean for people who've been through hard times. I'm sure it'll help with what you're looking for.
Janis, you're so smart and funny and I wish I'd gotten more time to talk to you. Thanks so much for looking after all of us, and for explaining compulsory heterosexuality to me. I hope people back home don't do that anymore to you, because you and your girlfriends deserve to love each other without anyone making your lives harder for it.
Cassandra, I really admire you for how strong you've been through all of this. You've also been there for all of us this whole time, and you deserve so much love and recognition for it. Thank you so much. I hope you can find that destiny for yourself that you were telling me about, with the help of all your friends this time.
Lumpy Space Princess, you're probably the bravest one of us here, and you're so confident. Can you make sure the others are okay, for me? Take care of them, and make sure they don't hurt themselves. I know you can do it. If anyone can do it, it's you.
Finally, Maya, you've been such a cornerstone of this family since we got here, and I know you said it's nothing, that it's just you looking out for yourself, but I don't believe that for a second. You're too hard on yourself, and I think if you just let yourself see how good you are for all of us, and how much your talent and passion and skill mean, you'd be much happier. Try to remember that, okay?
Anyway, when all of you get out of here, if someone could bring my lyre back to Mister Hermes and tell him I'm sorry I couldn't make it home, I'd really appreciate it. It was a gift from him, and I'm sure he'd really like it back. Thank you all so much for being such a good family to me. I'll miss all of you.
